    Fractional-order feedback control of a poorly damped system

    This study presents the design of a fractional-order proportional-integral (FOPI) controller for a mass-spring-damper system which is poorly damped. A model based design technique is used to design a FOPI controller for this system. A good performance of the closed loop control of a high order oscillatory system, such as the mass-spring-damper system, is with traditional proportional-integral (PI) controllers difficult to achieve. Therefore, a comparison between a traditional PI controller and a FOPI controller is performed by simulation. The simulation results show that the FOPI controller outperforms the classical PI controller resulting in an increased damping of the oscillations while maintaining a reasonable control effort

    Design and implementation of a real-time autonomous navigation system applied to lego robots

    Teaching theoretical concepts of a real-time autonomous robot system may be a challenging task without real hardware support. The paper discusses the application of the Lego Robot for teaching multi interdisciplinary subjects to Mechatronics students. A real-time mobile robot system with perception using sensors, path planning algorithm, PID controller is used as the case to demonstrate the teaching methodology. The novelties are introduced compared to classical robotic classes: (i) the adoption of a project-based learning approach as teaching methodology; (ii) an effective real-time autonomous navigation approach for the mobile robot. However, the extendibility and applicability of the presented approach are not limited to only the educational purpose

    Detection and estimation of moving obstacles for a UAV

    In recent years, research interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has been grown rapidly because of their potential use for a wide range of applications. In this paper, we proposed a vision-based detection and position/velocity estimation of moving obstacle for a UAV. The knowledge of a moving obstacle's state, i.e., position, velocity, is essential to achieve better performance for an intelligent UAV system specially in autonomous navigation and landing tasks. The novelties are: (1) the design and implementation of a localization method using sensor fusion methodology which fuses Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) signals and Pozyx signals; (2) The development of detection and estimation of moving obstacles method based on on-board vision system.     SIFT based algorithm for point feature tracking

    In this paper a tracking algorithm for SIFT features in image sequences is developed. For each point feature extracted using SIFT algorithm a descriptor is computed using information from its neighborhood. Using an algorithm based on minimizing the distance between two descriptors tracking point features throughout image sequences is engaged. Experimental results, obtained from image sequences that capture scaling of different geometrical type object, reveal the performances of the tracking algorithm

    Vibration suppression in multi-body systems by means of disturbance filter design methods

    This paper addresses the problem of interaction in mechanical multi-body systems and shows that subsystem interaction can be considerably minimized while increasing performance if an efficient disturbance model is used. In order to illustrate the advantage of the proposed intelligent disturbance filter, two linear model based techniques are considered: IMC and the model based predictive (MPC) approach. As an illustrative example, multivariable mass-spring-damper and quarter car systems are presented. An adaptation mechanism is introduced to account for linear parameter varying LPV conditions. In this paper we show that, even if the IMC control strategy was not designed for MIMO systems, if a proper filter is used, IMC can successfully deal with disturbance rejection in a multivariable system, and the results obtained are comparable with those obtained by a MIMO predictive control approach. The results suggest that both methods perform equally well, with similar numerical complexity and implementation effort
